Headaches and Migraines are among the most frequent conditions for which patients come to see us at our office, after neck and back pain. Even though headaches can have many causes, we have noticed that many of the different types of headaches tend to originate from problems in the neck area.

Pain often is felt in the upper neck as well as the back of the head, and can vary from a throbbing pain to a more constant pain. Migraines tend to be severe, Headache & Migraine Treatmentrecurring, and longer lasting headaches that can be debilitating for many people. Migraines are typically divided into two different categories, although there are many more subdivisions that exist. These two main types of migraines are common (or migraine without aura) and classic (or migraine with aura). The pain is usually one sided which covers one half of the forehead and also one eye, but pain may also spread from the rear of the head to the eye or even in some instances be felt over both of the eyes. Sensations that have been described by patients can include pains which are throbbing pain, pulsing pain and/or stabbing pain. Common Migraine (or migraine without aura)

This is the most frequently experienced type of migraine, which accounts for approximately 80% of all migraine attacks. Typically this involves a unilateral pulsing headache which occurs more commonly in females and usually starts in young adulthood. While these headaches are normally severe, those that suffer from this condition are usually able to continue with their regular daily activities, albeit with considerable discomfort. Nausea and vomiting are often associated with common migraines.

Classic Migraine (or migraine with aura)

This type of migraine headache accounts for around 10-15% of all migraines. It is characterized by the usual throbbing unilateral headache similar to the common migraine, but is also preceded by what is called an aura. This refers to symptoms which are experienced before the onset of a throbbing sensation headache, including symptoms related to vision such as flashing lights, known as scintillation, and the presence of a blind spot, commonly referred to as scotoma.
